I have a friend who wants to give me her kid's RES. Anything I need to know besides UVB, filters and calcium supplements? I've never had turtles before, though I have kept snakes, frogs and fish.

You'll need a basking area with temps about high 80's. Water heater to keep water around mid 70's. The tank needs to be 10 gallons per inch of turtle (some say to add another 15 for good measure). Turtle eats plants, veggies, blood worms, shrimp snacks, turtle sticks (hatchling sticks if its a young turtle). Then there also is adoption. Anything I missed someone else will more than likely get.

Instead of the tank being 10 gallons per inch of turtle, try making the water IN the tank 10 gallons per inch of turtle. Im tired of seeing these aquatic turtles that can hardly swim because they only have had 2 inches of water their whole life.

Try to get the slider book by Phillipe de Vosjoli. Most pet stores have it, or it can be ordered from amazon.com. It's an inexpensive paperback, but lots of good information.

how big is the turtle? they will grow to 10-12 inches....so try to find the biggest tank possible you can afford...start looking around.

the Turtle Dock and Turtle ramp are good for the basking area.

get a Fluval 304 or 404 for a filter...so then you dont have to worry about dirty water.

get a Python Siphon--so u can clean the water

trust me...you'll want to spend the money now because if you buy cheaper stuff...you'll continue to buy ceahper stuff because it doesnt have great performance(i bought 3 $40 filters before i spent the $160 to buy a really good filter that i dont have to clean out every week.
