Where are all of these prasinus coming from???

bmendyk Feb 10, 2004 01:47 PM

I thought that the doors were closed on this species until they are bred to f2 status...and all of these appear to be adults/subadults, possibly wc, since some of them have pretty terrible body weights. How are these being exported, and if so, does anybody know who's breeding them, or are they just egg collecting over there in indo...is it bushmastern breeding them?? Just curious, as for you go years without any (especially females) being available, and now, within the last week or so, their have been at least a dozen of them offered for sale... How'd they get around the red tape??

They are comeing from Indo.. Not sure who the supplier is though.
I imagine they are getting Illegal documents and sending them into the U.S as F2's. Everyone in indo. I have speken with knows of noone at that status to be sending them over legally.

They came in last year and again this year. There are ways around the system it is not perfect.

I myself would like to see the Cites documents these came in with. So far noone will put up though.

Hi Bob, not long ago an old friend of mine moved to indo. Recently he sent a batch of them to another old friend from Cal. His name is Mike, you know, Mike from SoCal(classifieds). He posted pics of them hatching and pics of a whole box of babies. I did talk to him and he brought them in legally, he said.

Another thing, Prasinus have not been legal to import for around or over 15 years. At least since I have kept monitors. But they were commonly imported under another name.

There are several things to consider. One is, Indo is not here. They do not live by or understand the laws we make. To them, the land is full of monitors, like in their yards. There is no reason to not sell them, as more just come in(as in pests)

Also, I talked to someone over there and he said they collect them in destroyed land. second generation growth, he said they are impossible to find naturally(undesturbed).

But that is all word of mouth.

My advice to you is, if you want them, buy them. If your concerned about all the rest, then do not. I would have to imagine, if they were illegal, they would have been busted right off. As I know fish and wildlife know exactly whats going on. Remember, the deed was done the second they are taken from nature, what happens after that is simply secondary. They will never be returned. So make some good use of them.

Years ago, my friend was talking to a fish and wildlife fella, and that fella told him to congratulate me on my recent hatching of lacies. That was within 1/2 hour of me posting it on here. hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Cheers FR

Yes, I saw that mike had some babies for sale. I happened to acquire my pair of t. tristis from Mike. I emailed him asking him about the origin of the prasinus, and it turns out that it is the same person that emailed me several months ago. This person told me that his family over there in indo, has been breeding prasinus and macraei, and he sent me a plethora of pics of hatchling prasinus and two hatchling macraei. I asked the gentleman the legality of the situation, as he wanted to sell them to me for very cheap. He said that everything was legal, and he could get legal paperwork.. I rationalized that I would not take any chances with trying to bring them in, because I thought that they were in fact, illegal to import; so I did not follow up on his paperwork, or terms..

I know we had the discussion about prasinus actually being listed as v. kordensis, when being imported, could this still be taking place, or has the agency finally caught on to the scam? Although some were babies, many of those available right now look like they are fresh wild caught adults and subadults..which basically disproves the F2 thing...

Oops, I've said too much, these forums have ears..
