How can you tell if eggs are infertile?????

lesliejulius Feb 10, 2004 02:06 PM

My veiled eggs are 8 1/2 months old and still aren't hatching. I don't know how to tell if they are infertile or not. They all are still bright white (no spots or anything) and perfectly round. No molding or caving in. Please help.

I would assume they are fertile until they either mold or collapse. What is the temp you have them at? Have you tried candling to check embryo development?

How do I do that? Pick them up and hold them infront of a candle? What do I look for? I've had them at 70-75 degrees the whole time. I know that if you increase the heat, they will hatch faster right? Last night I turned the incubator up to 78. Thanks for your help! Do you think 8 1/2 months is too long?

no, don't use a candle...take a piece of cardboard and punch about a 1/4 inch hole through it...in a dark room, place an egg on the hole in the cardboard...then place the cardboard on a bright flashlight (so the light concentrates up through the hole into the egg....you then can either see an embryo, or you'll see blood vessels in the egg...sounds like you're doing everthing right, just be patient.....
