Feeding Dilemma- Brumation Issue.... Need a little help from XP hog keepers

northamexotics Feb 10, 2004 02:06 PM

First of all, let me say I have been keeping various boids, pythons, and colubrids for 10 years. That being said, I purchase a trio of late '03 Western hogs last year (my first hogs). They all had fed fairly regularly, two on scented pinks and one on unscented.

Over the past 3 weeks, the two scented eaters have gone off feed. I made no attempt to brumate these guys as they were on the small side and I was concerned that they didn't have enough mass to sustain themselves. They've been kept in my snake room with a temp range of the low to mid 70's in the evening to 80 during the day. They always have water and hides and a clean enclosure. One eats every time food is offered and her growth has greatly outpaced her counterparts but I'm really getting concerned about the other two.

I would appreciate any insight as to my next steps, suggestions, comments, spare change.....

Thanks,
-Jason

I have 1.1 Westerns, and they do this every year, reguardless of what temperature, if I scent, etc. It is fairly normal for W. hogs to go off food for 2-4 months during the winter. If you are really concerned, I have found that soaking pinkies in warm water, then sticking them in front of the nose of the hog, so that the water runs down their mouth works well. Just my 2 cents.
