gerbils

mistysprouse Feb 10, 2004 04:38 PM

my friend has a ball that doesn't eat, so the advice given here about getting used gerbil bedding to scent the rats sounded like a great idea. well after doing alot of calling to different pet stores and not finding any gerbils, one finally tells me that they are against the law to have in California. So, so much for that idea! CA has soo many strange rules here. just thought I would pass this info on in case other CA people were looking into this

A quick trip to Reno will solve that problem.

A herpetologist told me, about six or seven years ago, that you might have to actually use a gerbil to scent the mouse/rat. Freeze it, cut a chunk off, thaw it and rub the blood on the mouse/rat. This was with the WC snakes that the owner of the pet store I used to work for would buy. It was one of my jobs to tame them. I've never used a rescenting method though, the owner of the store was against it (nice guy) and I've never had any problems with my guy eating. If you're in SoCal, you might be able to find someone willing to ship you some used bedding.

Good luck.

I am assuming that this snake is a wild caught bought from your local pet store. See if they will take it back, exchange or give you store credit. Take that money and buy a nice new captive breed and born animal from a good breeder. In my little bit of experience its not worth the effort to have to deal with wild caught animals. This is of course a general statement. Take it for what its worth. Later, Chris
