What is panacur called commercially and..?

hotback66 Jun 08, 2003 04:13 PM

What name is panacur sold under at pet shops? I read somewhere on this board that you can obtain it from stores under a different name. Also, is it ok to use even if not 100% positive that my gecko has parasites? The veterinarian around here doesn't know anything about herps.

Also, what does everyone do to keep the temperature down? I have a Zoo Med UTH and am using newpaper as a substrate for my juvenile. I put about 10 layers of newspaper over the UTH but it still gets up to about 100 in some spots. Would it be a good idea to put some sand under the newspaper to disperse the heat some? Or is there something else that i can do. Thanks
jason

I don't have some of your answers but i do have 1 yes panacure is completely safe even if a gecko doesn't have parasites. Many people use it for procautionary measures. I personally get panacure from teh beanfarm.com and dose every new gecko i get with it. Hope this helps.

Not that I'm jcgecko, but I can answer this question. The dosage is 25 to 50 mg of panacur per kg of animal (it's used on mammals too, hence the crazy dosage for a sub-100 gram reptile ). What it comes down to is very very little. Like a grain or two if it's in powder form (the powder isn't 100% medicine). If it's in liquid form, you'll have to figure out the concentration of that and do some math. Anyway, dose once a week for 2 or 3 weeks, depending on how the fecals come back.

But as was mentioned, it's very safe - I think the concentration I've heard quoted is that it's safe up to 5000x the recommended dosage. If your vet doesn't know reptiles, I'd suggest the book "Understanding Reptile Parasites". It's less than $10 usually, and full of good information.

You need a thermostat to keep the uth temp down. The uth just plugs into it and then you plug the thermostat into the outlet. You can buy them at a petstore.

Its very safe, I use it for routine wormings.

I'd recommend the liquid over the paste, its much easier to administer.

As others have said, 25-50mg/kg is the recommended dosage.

It's called Safegaurd. The dosage given to me by my vet is .01 cc per gram of leopard gecko weight, though others have told me that is high.
