Beginner ??

Hello,

Well I am a beginner to a lot of this stuff, but would like to get up a Vivaium. I have had tanks before with lizards, but always just keep a dish of water. We have tried frogs but they never make it. So now we are thinking of setting up a Vivaium tank, leaving it up for 6 months before adding frogs. Guess I figure that is a better way to make sure the plants, water systems, etc are stable and growing. So what I would like it step-by-step institutions for a beginner. I would like to plan something along the lines of a 40 gallon tank with a waterfall, lots of plants, some driftwood, etc. As for frogs I would like either tree frogs or maybe dart frogs, but I worry about our bad luck with frogs so far.

Our history with frogs: The first one was a white tree frog that died 5 days after we got him. Which after contacting the store I was told his cage mate had also died, so I am figuring it was at no fault of ours. The second one dies 3 weeks after we got it. It was a baby white tree frog. It was in a 20 gal high tank, with a screen top. 1/3 of the top was covered with a plexi-glass to help keep the moister levels up. There was a back “fishtank” light on top of the plexi-glass for lighting. Inside the tank we had a large rock water dish that was changed 3-4 times a week. I used bed-a-beast with moss topping for bedding, we had several plants, some driftwood and a large rock for décor. There was also a large ½ log hiding area for it. The humidity was about 40-50%, with the temperature stays at about 80 daytime and 77 nighttime. (our house stays about 77 daytime and 74 nighttime) It was eating well 3-4 crickets per day until the last week when it would only eat a couple ever few days. Then one night we when in to do our nightly check and feeding and it was lying in the middle of the cage died. Any ideas on what happened? We have had geckos, lizards, fish, ec in the past with no problems.

Anyways with all of that said I would love a lesson for beginners on what to do. We are planning to set-up a Vivaium tank in our living area of the house. Both my husband and I love the sound of waterfalls, frogs, crickets, etc.

Thanks for any help.
Venus
