Dwarf Caiman Advice / Handling Question

xcaimankidx Feb 10, 2004 06:34 PM

I recently purchased a Dwarf Caiman from a local pet store and I am beginning to handle him for a few minutes at the time with gloves on, in an attempt to tame it as much as possible. Today is the first time I handled it, I have had it a week but was giving it a few days to adjust to its new enviroment. I have read a few things on the internet but all seem to be very negative in an attempt to persuade people against owning them as pets. I am a student who lives at home with pretty good experience in reptiles, I have a lot of time and felt ready, I am in it for the long haul, as I am very aware Caimans have a very large life span. I am writing this to ask for advice, clues, and support. One thing imparticular is I noticed which I was handling my caiman Dallas, it made very weird noises, one I am very sure was just hissing, but the other Is hard to describe, it was a vibration put put put sorta sound if I had to
put it into words. Do any of you experience owners have any advice? Is that normal? Was it just part of his hissing / threats? Was I doing something wrong / holding him wrong? ANY advice and information would be greatly appreciated, I have done a lot of research and talked to a few people but feel like there isn't very much info out there on this Beautiful animal. Thanks in advanced for your advice, comments, and suggestions!

Regarding questions about maintaining and housing the animal you can check out CROC FAQ at www.crocidilian.com. The strange noise tou speak of some people state its like a croaking. The caimen is calling out(like calling for its mother) because it feels threatened by you. Keep in mind when handling your Dwarf that it is stressful to the animal and dwarfs tend to be aggressive even through adulthood. I'm not saying you couldn't calm his aggresiveness over time but it will take alot of work with this type of caimen. hope this helps. Jason
