snake mites on caimans

xcaimankidx Feb 10, 2004 08:10 PM

I recently bought a ball python from a pet store in the area about 3 days ago and recently found small black bugs I believe to be mites, I also have a dwarf caiman and my question is can he get the mites? A few articles have said No because they are specific to snakes, not humans or lizards and if I am correct a caiman would be more closely related to lizards than to snakes... Please help, I am freaking out, and quite upset they sold me a snake with mites, especially considering it was believed to be the premier reptile place around and I had spent over 700 dollars just two days before buying the caiman and now I am broke and cant afford a vet at this time. PLEASE Help, also advice on treating snakes would be appreciated.

The snake mites should not infect or affect the caiman. Crocodilians in general don't have problems with ectoparasites. Believe it or not, crocodilians are more closely related to birds than lizards.
