Are these fancy Helix/Big Apple thermostats needed for tegus or...

boidsntegus Feb 10, 2004 09:01 PM

will another mid-grade (the LLL special going on right now), or is there really a need for these $150 setups? I have been reading about thermostats on the forums, and there seems to be only discussions about these two types. Any advice?

Hello,

The difference between the Helix and Big Apple therms as opposed to the Alife therms is that the Helix and Big Apple are proportional therms. This means they are on all the time and adjust the wattage to regulate heat. The Alife (LLLReptile) are an on/off therm which only turn on when the temp drops too low. I personally like the Helix the best but am not willing to pay the price when the Alife suits my needs for all my herps. The biggest advantage to the Helix is the night drop feature which is good for snakes and other herps requiring a differnt temp at night. I use about 20 Alife therms and love them. With my basking type critters I simply use basking bulbs on rheostats for the day time and the Alife to make sure the temps don't drop too low at night. In my opinion the only down side to the Alife is that you can't use them with bulbs or they tend to freak out the animal since the light is on and off all the time. I use mine with ceramic heat emitters and just supply abiant light with regular bulbs or UVB tubes where required.

Regards,
Ken
