Hmmmm.... Breeding question

hhawk20005 Feb 10, 2004 09:45 PM

Hi, i just put my female in my males tank to breed. He jumped at her tail and nipped at it. Then is tail shook a bit. She walked away, and he went back in his hide. Am i doing anything wrong? do you have any tips on what i should be doing? Thanks

the tail beating thing....

he does that to see if it another male.. if he beats his tail at an opposing gecko and that gecko beats it tail back.. then he knows its a rival male.. if the gecko does not....then he knows its a female

i would just let them be..

thats not actually true geckogod unless my leos are gay. my geckos do that when they are ready to mate. im not saying ur wrong but its not all true. they do that when theres a male in the tank or whn there ready to mate.

geckogod2 Feb 10, 2004 11:08 PM

umm..yeah...ok...he is beating his tail looking for a female gecko to mate with.. still its used to decide who is male and who is female..

Since your males and females are together all year, does your male attempt to mate all year long or just around breeding season? Does he stick with the girls or keep to himself?

Thanks

they do not mate all year long. only late spring summer, they do..

they don't mind being around each other.. they socialize i guess you could say..

GG2 and CT you are both right. Hawk if you are really worried about stressing out the female, you might want to mate them in her enclosure, if that is possible. I think the first meeting was the male telling her this is his territory and he is ready. Who knows what she told him.

I keep my breeding groups together all the time also, but if I didn't I would put the male in the female's "world" after all she has to do all the work.

Sounds like he is interested..but she has other ideas...for now.
The only problem with leaving them together permanently, is that you'll have to GUESS conception dates. And unless you want to do that, remove the male...BUT the only draw back to this is 1) if you want an EXACT date...you'll have to space the pairings a few weeks until you see eggs (which may not promise eggs with one try) or 2) Get an approximate date, with maybe a few days left together to know for sure thats when they mated, within those few days.

Its all up to you. It really wont matter much, waiting for a female to lay is a patience game either way, they'll never go by your schedule...so I say just leave him in there if they're getting along, and then check every few weeks to see if she has eggs.

Good luck, I cant wait to see my grand-grand-grandgeckos! He should produce some stunning babies for ya!

Maybe, they aren't ready, or maybe shes not receptive. If it were me I would leave him in for a bit and just leave them alone. If you don't want to leave him I would take him out and try again in a few days.
