Beardies puking up mealies

SherryLynnZ Jun 08, 2003 04:41 PM

Hi. I have 5 beardies, 4 adults and a juvi. I've had my adults for at least 3 years. Just recently, I fed them superworms, one of their favorites. They chowed down, as they always do. The next day, I saw they puked the mealies all up all over the place! What happened? I also had a similar puking incident. I had 2 leucistic leopard geckos, juvi's, and they had some wax worms and puked them up the next day as well. Sadly, the leo's died. I don't know why. Since the incident, I have not fed my beardies the mealies. Any ideas?

I have had similar experiences, as well with beardies and with chams.

I think it's one of two things, or a combo of the two:

They are over-eating. Try feeding them a few at a time, a couple times a day. Gorging themselves on goodies like supers and waxies will lead to purging. Their eyes are sometimes bigger than their stomachs!

Another possibility:

You got bad batches of feeders. I always resist the urge to immediately feed them and I put them in new, clean containers and gutload them with fresh fruits and veggies for at least 24 hours before feeding them to any of my little guys.

I would try the above and also make sure their lights stay on at least 2 hours after feeding...otherwise they don't have a chance to digest enough before it begins to rot in their tummys overnight.

Good luck!

I had a similar incident about a week ago. My daughter (who doesn't deal with my beardies much) decided to feed my male and female superworms. Well she just kept throwing them on the floor and my female just gobbled them up. My male only had about 4, female probably about 15-20. My daughter figured that if she kept eating them she was just that hungry. Well the next day my female(jane) was just laying around in her pen. Wouldn't even come out to run around the house like her mate was doing. A bit longer she ran out to the middle of our kitchen and puked up probably about 10 undigested worms. GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!! She acted better but would not eat. Well the next afternoon she did the same thing but only about 5-6 worms. It took about 4 days after that before I could get her to eat anything at all. But she is fine now and my daughter knows not to feed them but 3 or 4 each and try not to let them steal each others worms.
