Question about fecal matter.

m40p Feb 10, 2004 10:23 PM

Hello,

I've purchased a uromastyx about a week and a half ago from a friend. He had it for about 2 months before he sold it to me. I have a question about his fecies. What color is it supposed to be? I believe I've seen a few dark brown to black pellets...but I noticed today that there was some thick milky looking substance next to his feed bowl. Is this diarreha or vomit or what? hmm. I believe he is a mali. He's been eating good on mustard greens and mixed veggies. I would take him to the vet but the vets around here don't know anything about herps. I believe the closest herp vet around is about 3 or 4 hours away

Thanks,
Brandon

Lizards combine urates into their fecal matter in order to save water. The bulk of the feces should be a dark portion but there is also a white portion (the solid urates) as well as differing amounts of water depending on their diet. Mine eat quite a bit of fresh greens so they tend to have a lot of water discharge as well. The water tends to mix in with the urates producing a milky looking, thicker liquid sometimes. It's hard to tell from your description what your looking at but this could be what it is. If your concerned about his health at all and the feces seems abnormal, you should bring it in to a local reptile vet and have it checked for parasites.
