Habitat and cleaning questions for Mangrove Snake

Nechushtan Feb 10, 2004 11:05 PM

After some wonderful suggestions from people on this forum I think I have a general idea of how I'd like to set up an enclosure for my first Mangrove. I'm thinking of creating a 6' wide, 2' deep, and 7 foot tall "greenhouse" (all glass or plexiglass) enclosure to set by our living room window. In this enclosure I would like to create a tropical environment complete with plants, fountain, the misting system I'd need for the mangrove anyway, and some extra lighting/heat source to keep the correct ambient temp. My questions are:
1) Am I missing anything or adding anything that would be dangerous?
2) When I do my monthly "major" cleaning what exactly do I clean (dirt flooring, walls, ceiling, plants, etc...)? Do I really need to wash each plant and replace all the soil?
3) What is the low temp threshold for a mangrove snake (dangerously low temp for the enclosure)?
Thanks.

Are there any other species (other snakes, invertibrates, reptiles, birds, anything???) that I could safely keep in the enclosure with the mangrove? How about a mate? Thanks.

Definitely not. Boiga dendrophila has ophiophagus tendencies, and there have been cases where captive-bred adult specimens that had been housed together for years suddenly cannibalized on one another.

It is strongly recommended to keep Mangrove Snakes separately.

1) Am I missing anything or adding anything that would be dangerous?

The most important aspects of such a setup are security, accessibility, and climate control. If you have those covered, then your setup will likely be adequate. There are always minor issues that need to be addressed after the fact, but those can be dealt with as they occur.

2) When I do my monthly "major" cleaning what exactly do I clean (dirt flooring, walls, ceiling, plants, etc...)? Do I really need to wash each plant and replace all the soil?

For a major cleanup, you should change the substrate and clean any other soiled or dirty parts of the enclosure. You certainly do not need to wash each plant or replace the potting soil, unless there is an obvious and/or immediate reason for doing so.

3) What is the low temp threshold for a mangrove snake (dangerously low temp for the enclosure)?

Boiga dendrophila are fairly suspectable to respiratory infections if the ambient temperatures drop too low. Ideally, the ambient temperatures throughout the enclosure should not drop below approximately 75 degrees Fahrenheit at any given time.
