Hey everyone...Boulder's awake + some other comments

georgio Feb 11, 2004 12:17 AM

Hi all,

I've been really busy lately but I have some good news. After months of sleeping soundly Boulder all of a sudden decided it was time to wake up. I found him in his tiny brumating cage trying to push the top off (literally, he was on his back two legs with his two front legs up pushing on the top). Since then he's done nothing but eat. I'm not sure where it's all going to go because I'm pretty sure he's not growing lengthwise anymore...he's just getting more and more fat. I promise to get some new pictures of the fatso later.

Artgeckko: Just saw the pictures of Grover and Lucy. They look great! Grover's longer than Boulder now...tell me when you get their weights. Grover's body still looks "leaner" especially his tail(see picture below)...Boulder kind of has that "wide" older lizard look (wonder how old he is...) I was wondering how much Grover eats? Boulder's bowl is a pie plate and he's been eating two heaping plates a day since he woke up. Do your big guys eat this much?

Sorry to hear there are some sick uro's out there...I hope they all get better.

Talk to everyone soon!

Peter

I'd like your opinion on Ra's gender. I finally got some pics of his underside and wanted to know if you think he's male or female. I believe you are regarded as one of the experts on here when it comes to sexing uros.
Here's the pic.
Thanks for your help

Looks like a male to me but the picture is a bit small... I wouldn't say I'm an "expert" but I am positive Boulder is a male and here is what his vent looks like. From the enlarged pores and the hemipenal bulges I would say Ra is a male.

Everyone here is saying he's male but no one really wants to confirm it and I understand that. I'll only be 100% sure if I put him with a female and he mates with her.
In Ra's tail pic, he's got that kind of V-shape form that Boulder has by the vent area.
Thanks for your help

I agree with Peter. To me it looks like a male due to what look like the penile bulges and the femoral pores being fairly prominent.Tough to say for sure without getting a better look, but my first instint was "male".Most of the people below seem to think female though *shrug*

Hey Peter!
Glad to see boulder is up and around. Did he lose any weight?
It would be interesting to note how much they lose(percent)during Brumation.
Anyway,
Lucy is older and seems to have the same build as Boulder.
He just gets wider. Grover who is going to be approximately 3 in May, just gets longer and longer.
They are my two most tame Egyptians.
I would say that Grover would eat 2 plates of greens plus anything else I would throw in. That boy can eat! I have never had him leave anything in the cage!
I offer large meals and alternate days with smaller offerings.
I just purchased a 100 count of mealworms so they are getting a little more protein in the diet lately.
Offering 1 plate a day for each of the 6 egyptians is causing me to build a garden on the west side of my backyard.
During the summer I let them out there and choose for themselves.
Good to see you on the posts-
How's Nebu Doing?

Hey Ed,

Good to hear from you. The garden works well...right now I have a yard full of miners lettuce, nasturtiums and dandelions and I let Boulder and Nova (8lb green iguana) walk around and eat everything. They both get along well and are now ganging up on the cat. What did you plant?

I wish I could have taken accurate measurements of Boulder's weight but my scale only goes up to 1000 grams and he's well over that. His belly sunk in quite a bit but I think it was just because he always has so much food in it while he's awake. The fat pads on his cheek, neck, under his front legs and tail did not get smaller in the least. I think they will generally lose weight in the beginning as he tended to get up every 2 weeks or so, bask and then poo just a little but would not eat. He did this until his stomach was completely empty. After their stomachs are empty I would not expect any decrease in weight and did not notice one in Boulder.

Nebu's doing well. I may try a different set up for his cage because I can never catch him anymore. He has cut back in his food slightly but is still growing.

I was down in NP this weekend visiting my girlfriend's mom; maybe next time I'm down there we could get some coffee or something.

Stay in touch,

Peter

Hey Peter-
Sorry, I left out the "PLAN" on letting them pick their own.
Although I have nasturtiums already, The garden is still in the design stage. I do plan all things Uromastyx.
The garden is 18 by 27 and I think will be raised beds-the soil here is too rocky.
So now that Boulder is up do you plan another female attempt?
I may have a line on a 20" LTC female. She's by all accoounts not very tame-I have been considering her.
Coffee? Sure!
Glad to hear all is well with the Uros. 8lb Iguana? Male or female?
Tlak to you soon,
Ed
