Savannah skin problems

geraldb Feb 11, 2004 12:17 AM

I rescued a savannah about a month ago. He is starting to loose his toes. I shecked for shed restricting them, but couldn't see anything. It is the tips a little above the toenail, a total of four toes that it's happening to. Two already lost the toenail, he was like that when I got him. The skin looks like it's dieing. I give him a nice soak in the bath about once a week. Today I noticed that he is going to loose part of his tail. I'm going to make a vet appointment tomorrow. I would like to get some info on what this could be, a parasite? He was given ivermection (sp), I will give him another dose tomorrow- it's been a month since the last. Anybody?

I doubt if this problem is caused by a parasite that requires Ivermectin. It sounds like some form of necrosis (possibly dry gangrene) that is most likely caused by a bacterial/fungal problem. A scraping should be taken & examined under a microscope &/or sent to a pathology lab for proper diagnosis.
