I have had this male for close to three years , yesterday I noticed one of the rear toes just the end near the nail where the nail was to the side , they can either make their nails go straight out or hook them down and back , while the nail was straight I moved it back to the normal straight with the rest of the toe position and he can move it and hook the nail and it stays in it's normal postion as it should but if he lets the nail flatten in line with the toe it may or may not go off to the side again , I don't see any swelling of signs of a break , the nail is not loose and it still functions as it should , I'm not sure how this happened but it was in his cage and there is not place that he can get a nail caught , I have seen broken toes before and this is not what this looks like , is it possible that he just sprained it ? If I check the same toe on the opposite foot I can make it move the same way the only difference is that it will not stay in this position , at times when the nail is off to the side he if I pick him up he will hook the nail normally and other times he will not , all I have done for now is use a piece of cloth bandage tape around the toe to keep it from moving to the side , and so the nail stays hooked in the downward position , I realize it is not life threatening but I would like it to stay normal , I would think if it was broken then he would have no control to move the toe tip and the nail at all and it would be at least weak and painful and swollen , any input would be helpful , he is not the sort like many monitors that run madly around the tank to get his nail caught of pull one out and again there is nothing in the tank to get it caught in , I made sure of that , it is a 125 gallon glass tank and I built the top a foot taller than the tank so he cannot reach the top or the wire hardware cloth ventelation grills , he is about 2 feet total length .Even the climbing area is a wooden pole that runs the lenght of the tank and it does not have grooves of splits in it for nails to catch , for no I have removed the large tub used for soaking and replaced it with a small water bowl so he will not get the tape splint wet but can still drink , the tape is not so tight as to cut off the flow of blood , just enough to keep the nail and toe end like the joint just behind the nail inline so it cannot be forced to the side .
