So what's a "German"?

sarahsea Feb 11, 2004 12:33 AM

I'm doing research *considering* finding a new baby beardie in the next several months. When I rescued Mr. Lyle 5 years ago, the only "different" beardies around were a few color morphs. Today I'm reading about "german giants". What are they all about? What do we know about their health?

Thanks!

bred from the larger P. vitticeps (there are actually two different groups in the wild, one larger than their neighbors)by the germans who paid more attention to breeding lines and non related dragons that we did in the US.

There are bigger boned and seem to be much heartier than the standard or common dragons, they have larger head that the regulars also.

I have several and they range in size from 500 grams to 1000 grams, 21- 24+ inches, so far from what we see, the babies grow more rapid the first several months then slow down around 6-7 months and continue to grow through their 2nd birthday. compared to our regulars they have less eating fussiness and rarely have had parasite problems. Personally I think they are a bit more intelligent than our regulars also.

below is two pictures of a adult female GG with a 1/2 gg and a regular in their pool and the bottom one is a male GG

is also the most gentle of them all, he actually uses his hand and rubs us back when we hold him and rub his back.

I said before I think they are a bit more intelligent than our commons also, they can be very stubborn when they have their mind set on something and they do not forget, even if it is days/weeks later.

We have three that can make sounds, one does it very often as a warning to us or to get attention to play her splash game. She grunts like a pig... LOL not the most pleasant sound, but she has learned it gets our attention and now two others that are around her have started making the same sound, a lot weaker than hers but I am impressed that they learned.

We need time to grieve the loss of Mr. Lyle and we want to make some enhancements to our lizard home, but when the time comes to get a new baby beardie, we’ll get a German from the Reptile Room. How can I contact you then? I couldn’t find the right kind of links on your website. We live in Clearwater so we could come pick out and pick up our new family member.

Mr. Lyle’s cremation is tomorrow. I sure do miss his sweet smile….
