How late is too late?

maxgold Jun 08, 2003 04:57 PM

I am curious to what times have people found herps on the road? I generally quit at about 12am but was always curious if the snakes move all night. I generally have found that temp, clouds, moon, weather play the most important role in moving the herps so I would think they may move all night.

In south Florida I have found corn snakes as late as 3:00 AM.
In north Florida I have found scarlet snakes as late as 1:30 AM.

It also seems that some snakes emerge later than others. For example, scarlet kingsnakes I usually expect to see later than other species.

I was out on May 5th and didn't start seeing snakes till past midnight.

The latest/earliest I've found stuff moving is right up untill daybreak.

I normally find stuff right at sunset and right at daybreak. One morning we went out at 3 and did not find snakes until 8 lol. All DOR's we saw were fresh within an hour, putting most snakes moving at about 7. It depends on weather largely...Andy
