Behaviour not befitting a lady LOL

RedQuake Feb 11, 2004 08:48 AM

Last night i was watching Lily walking around the tank, she's actually quite funny at times but did something i'm not impressed with. She was making her way back to the terra cotta cave from around the log and upon getting a view of the cave, stopped, raised her tail and began slowly waving it back and forth. I had to get a flash light so i could peer into the cave and see what she was uptight about. Nala was in there. Lily proceeded to walk into the cave and there wasn't any fighting but Nala did eventually leave.

Do geckos create a pecking order and is that an acceptable behaviour from a group?
They all at times get a bit pushy, bulldozing their way into a hide someone else is in etc. theres no one aggresser, but Nala seems to get pushed more often than anyone. There are more hides than geckos, all are about the same size and i haven't noticed any weight loss (although they haven't been together that long).
They are all eating but come to the dish at different times. Does this suggest theres a hierarchy or just that there hunger comes on differently?

I don't know whether to remove Nala or not.....sometimes she's just as pushy as Lily or Dot (the two with the most attitude, then again Abby will do the same). Sometimes i find 2-3 curled up togther, other times they are all separate.

Also, i must have picky geckos cause theres 3 humid hides and NONE of them use it when they are shedding...they either use the half log or the cave. Twice i've had to put a gecko in a moist container to help them finish shedding...This was not a problem when they were on their own, why would it be now?

Thankyou for any input

One of my girls ALWAYS eats first if she wants and the others make way.

As long as their isn't any real fighting, I'd just let them work things out. You'll just need to watch for signs of stress, where one or some aren't getting enough to eat, etc. Some leos don't do well when there is competition.

Thats very good to know, thankyou. Right now Dot who is extremely pushy is curled up with Nala. I have two bowls of mealworms available at all times and since the tank is right beside my bed and has a red light at night i can see them. Each have eaten: Dot usually first, then Lily and then Zoe, Abby and Nala all take turns at the bowl. Sometimes in different orders but for the most part Dot is first then Lily. I'm surprised too that Dot and Lily dont finish off whats there, cause when they were by themselves they always ate every worm. Now they'll eat about 10 then move on to their nightly adventures.
