Caging Question??

jtrott Feb 11, 2004 02:02 PM

Well, it is about that time. My male Burm is a little over 5' and I think it is time to move him to his final cage. He is currently in a 40 breeder. I am thinking that 6'X2.5' will be plenty big. I have HIGHLY considered Animal Plasics, and I do push them, but I was wondering what some of you use for your burms. I am not that handy, so building something is WAY out of the question. I believe that I am going to go with AP, but I just wanted to get some of your opinions about who builds the best cage.

Thanks for your time,
Jason

Vision

that's just my 2 cents

Vision makes a good cage, but the shipping in ridiculous(sp?). If I could find someone locally who sold them, I would jump all over it. If I am going to pay $350 for a cage and $150 on shipping, I might as well just drive up to MO, or wherever they are made and pick the damn thing up myself.

In closing, good cages, high shipping cost because of weight. Love 'em other than the shipping.

Personally I would think an adult, even a male, would need a longer cage than a 6 footer...but I guess it would work providing the male isn't too large. My 13' female is in a cage 8'L X 2'D X 2'H and it's really too small for her, though she's going to have to make do for a while longer until I can afford to buy or build her a bigger one. As for manufactured cages, I use the Vision cages for my boas (the 48" & 54" models) and have heard of a lot of people using their 6' models for burms. Animal Plastics is offering a cage 84"L X 30"D X 18"H that I would think would be great as it gives you that extra foot in length. They've also come highly recommended though I've not tried them yet. I've also heard a lot of praise for Habitat Systems cages, but they're pricier than the other two I believe. Another option is to have one built for you. Even if you aren't handy, other people are - whether you go to a friend to build it, or a professional (cabinet maker, etc.), it might be worthwhile financially. Best of luck whichever route you pick. Raven

I understand what you are saying about the cage being a little small, but a 6'X3' cage is bigger than the 8ftr you have. A 6'X3' cage will give you 18' of floor space. You 8'X2' cage only give you 16' of floor space, so even though a 6ftr is shorter, it still gives more floor space, which is the most important thing for a burm. Well, that and proper temps. I think I am gonna go with the T15 at animal Plastics which is 72"LX28"DX24"T. I think that will be my best bet. I have also been checking out the Boaphiles, but the customer service stinks. Good cages from what I hear though, when you finally receive them. Nothing against Jeff, but I do not wanna do business with someone who has horrible Customer Service.

You just contradicted yourself if floorspace is the most important thing for a burm then you would keep the 6' by 3' cage for now and get a bigger cage later.

Floorspace of 6' by 3'-18 sq. ft
Floorspace of 6' by 2.33'(28 in)-16.3 sq. ft (rounded off)
Floorspace of 7' by 2.5' (30 in)-17.5 sq. ft

I agree with you 1000%, yes that is 1,000, but I work 7 days a week, and it is hard for me to be home to accept a package delivered by a truck. The T15, I believe, can be delivered and not signed for. I think that the 6' cage is more than enough room for a male burm. I may be wrong, but I will cross that bridge when I get there, and if it is not big enough, then I will buy a bigger one, and the T15 can be used for a different animal. The burm is not the only animal I have. I also have some boas, some balls, a Tegu and some Crested Geckos. When one cage is grown out of, everyone gets a new home. Thanks for pointing out that I contradicted myself, and if AP made a 6'X3', I will be all over that thing, like you would not believe.

I know I might not know too much about burms but i did a hell of alot of research on caging. I suggest you go with cages by design. For a 8'x30"x18" cage it is only 560 dollars including shipping! thats a good price to me.

willis1234 Feb 11, 2004 04:50 PM

a 6' by 2.5' cage for a full grown male burm is way to small. You probably want to go with a 8' by 3' or 4' at least. It isnt hard to build a cage at all. Even if you arent good at building.

meltingfetus Feb 11, 2004 05:25 PM

i just ordered the vision 632 to keep my male burm in. the shipping was pretty high almost 200.00 dollars. i called ap cages for a shipping quote and they were only about 50.00 dollars cheaper. i have heard alot of good things about ap cages but have never seen one in person so i went with the vision. 1 other reason i went with the vision is because i like the sliding front doors. ap doors are hinged and they wont have the sliding model out for a couple months.

jtrott Feb 11, 2004 05:34 PM

I agree with you about the sliding doors. I really like the look of AP, but Vision is a long time and very respectful name in the reptile business. I just can't imagine paying $200 for shipping. I have never seen an AP cage's shipping more than $55, unless you are getting one of the bigger models that has to be shipped by truck.

Thanks for your opinion,
Jason

who supplies animal plastics or do they have their own website.. also check the shipping from lllreptile, because i think they actually sell vision cages cheaper than vision themselves do.

toddbecker Feb 11, 2004 09:58 PM

I can answer both of your questions for you. Yes lllreptiles does sell them cheaper then vision does. So does Big apple Herps. The problem is the shipping is outrageous. If you are within days driving distance I would suggest going and picking them up. Anyway, I know that the vision 632(6'x3'x1 1/2') is priced at $340 at big apple herps. As far as animal plastics website, go to wantapet.net... hope this helps, Todd
