Housing a monitor with a tegu...

boidsntegus Feb 11, 2004 02:55 PM

A friend and myself were debating on whether a monitor lizard could be housed communally with an Arg tegu. Has anyone here ever heard of housing a tegu with any species of monitor? I know in general that monitors are more aggressive, but are all species so aggressive and territorial that they must live alone?

I'm not saying that it should be done or even tried, but I have integrated Tegus and Monitors into freeroaming situations with other lizards. I have an Argentine Tegu that has freeroam of the whole house. I also have a Sav that freeroams one room and a Blackthroat that freeroams another room, both of which are visited frequently by the Tegu. I've not had any problems with aggression, even with other species involved like Green Iguanas and Cyclura Iguanas. This particular freeroaming Tegu once tried to breed a large male Sav. The Sav just kinda stayed still until Dom was finished and then moved on. LOL

Here's my disclaimer first - I do not recommend mixing ANY species, BUT, I did it many, many years ago with a Water monitor and a Colombian tegu. The lived together happily in a converted 10' x 12' bedroom (mulch, swimming pool, x-large branches, etc) for over a year. They got along fine the whole time. Again, I do not recommend this, and certainly not in any enclosure smaller than room-sized, but it can be done successfully. Billy
