Question about cages...

tsioc Feb 11, 2004 04:26 PM

I am looking to get a new cage for my calyptratus, and am looking at custom ordering a cage from PC Herp.

Does anyone have experience with these guys? Know where I can find any reviews on their cages? Is there any other company you would suggest I check out instead / also?

feel free to email me if you prefer not to discuss this here. I A friend of mine was banned from these forums a while back for discussing a bad experience he had with a specific retailer, and I don't know if they still look down on those types of honest discussions or not, so... occams-indecision@sbcglobal.net

Thanks for your help.

I really like Martin's Cages:

They built a fantastic cage to my specs, shipped it fast
and I love it. Prices are good too. Great customer service. I highly recommend them.

Good luck.

I like the idea of a wire cage, but how do you prevent crickets from escaping?

I usually feed my cham from a fishbowl. I just drop the crickets in there, and they almost never jump out. He'll either hold onto a branch or stand on the lip of the fishbowl and eat from there. Though lately he's gotten kind of lazy. Last night I saw him actually hang inside the bowl, and merely touch the tip of his tongue to the food, instead of taking aim and shooting.

Is he smart?(relatively speaking) Or just lazy?

Yeah, with a wire cage you have to cup-feed. I advise you to stay way away from mesh (window screen). It pulls out toenails (sometimes causing infection), and they don't grow back. I actually use one of those bird cage dishes to feed. I snap the crickets' back legs off to prevent them from jumping out. I know - kind of brutal. But I like the bird cage dish because it's easy for him to get to, and the clips fit in between the wire spacing nicely.

My Jackson's will also get "lazy" when it comes to eating. Sometimes he will even just grab them with his mouth, not even using his tongue! Other times he will hit them from ten inches away.

One thing you might want to think about...

Could your Chameleon fall into the fishbowl and not be able to get out?
Also, I heard that using clear glass containers sometimes causes them to try to "shoot through" the glass (they don't understand glass), and this can cause tongue damage. Just a thought.

He has tried to shoot through the glass, I've seen it once or twice. But he is usually above it, so he looks down into it. I also sprayed the glass and made it a bit harder to see through (hard water stains basically).

He has ended up in it a few times. I helped him out once, but he gets out on his own.

how hard are these cages to clean? It looks like there is only a somewhat small door on the front. Is there a larger panel that opens to provide better access to the cage?

I hade mine made to custom specs. I had one small door made, and then a huge door on one side that I can get the ficus tree in and out through.
