Problem Feeder....

dmac77 Feb 11, 2004 04:38 PM

I've got an adult corn that one of my brother's friends gave to me about four weeks ago. This corn was captive bred and born and is about 4 years old. Ryan, my brother's friend, had to give the snake up since he was joining the military and getting moved around a lot. He had never had a problem getting the snake to eat, but something had changed. About a week after I got the snake, I fed it a small rat and it ate just fine. That was about three weeks ago now, and the thing won't eat. I tried getting it to eat again late last week, but nothing. I've tried twice today and it won't eat. It's starting to get thin, but nothing seems to be working. I've even tried taking the snake and putting it in a closed cardboard box with two mice (both fresh kills) in the box with it to try and entice it to feed. Nothing has worked. The snake was not in brumation, so I don't think that's the problem. Temp and humidity in the cage are fine... mid 80's for temp and right around 65% humidity.

If anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!!

David

You may want to find out from your friend what her housing conditions were like over there. I could be that 80-something is too hot for her, irregardless of what the books say, if she's acclimated to a different temperature range.

Also, if she's used to eating just white mice, for example, it may be that you're offering her the wrong color...or a mouse when she's used to rats, etc.

I think you should ask more questions about what she's used to and then go from there. Either way, 3 weeks isn't a real problem. She just may not be hungry and that's ok too.

It's breeding season, or at least for some early bloomers it is, and males will sometimes go off food while "searching for love". Other than that, maybe just the adjustment of a new home is causing some stress. If you can, try to copy exactly how your friend had him set up, maybe that will make a difference. But I would bet it's either a little warm or male.
