What is the best beginner snake? I don't want one that will need its own room at adult size but is colorful
In my opinion the corn snake is a very good beginner snake. I started with a corn. Their basic needs are warm side, cool side, couple hiding placed, water bowl. I use an under the tank heat pad and a light for the warm side.Light is on a timer so they can have a natural night time. They do good with temps in the 80's on warm side, 70's on cool side. I have never had mine refuse a meal.
Bill & Kathy Love have a excellent book on corn snakes. They come in almost every color you can think of and get to around 4-5 feet in length.
A few months back, I put together an excel spreadsheet grading many species of snakes on their appropriateness for a beginner.
I based it on such criteria as
adult size
ease of feeding
ease of feeding babies
cost of food
housing requirements
temperament
cost
etc.
From that comparison, I found that the best scoring snakes (best beginner snakes) were cornsnakes and rosyboas. Both are readily available, cheap, easy to house and feed, and docile snakes.
