Oh no, rats as pets opens up a whole new can 'o' worms. lol.

Pet rats are VERY social animals, and need to be kept in pairs (can be kept in same sex pairs, and some people keep 4-6 same sex groups!)

and need about 2 cubic ft PER RAT. They need a varied diet, since they are pet rats low quality dog food is not really an option, PLEASE email me for a GREAT website about pet rats!

NO fish tanks, rats LOVE to climb! and the amonia will build up really fast in a fish tank/glass aquarium. They love hammocks, ropes, chew toys, ladders, and can be litter trained IF you work really hard at it! lol go to www.m*a*rtin*sca*ges*.*c*om (again take out the ***) to get a good idea on rat cages. Now with wire bottoms and levels that are wire, you might want to get linoleum(sp?) because the wire will give them bumblefoot! They love out time so you might want to rat proof a room.or use the bathroom, but make sure there are no holes in the floor, the toilet lid is closed, and that they can't get down the sink drain or the tub drain. Goodluck, pet rats are alot more care than one would think!

This IS a feeder forum. We do know how to take care of our rats thank you. Or else we wouldn't be as successful at raising them as we are. I've bred thousands of rats in the last 3 years with very few fatalities from any disease or irritant, including ammonia.. keeping them on pine bedding and in glass aquariums... 55 gallon breeder tanks... 1.6 to 1.8 running in each... and up to 60 pinks in one at a time.. grown to weaned size then sorted into grow out tanks. I clean every 10 days... spot clean twice during that period. Fresh water every day and fresh food... My "pet" rats aren't treated any different than my feeders. Indeed, my pets are also breeders... Rats don't REQUIRE wire cages and all the toys to thrive in captivity. They DO require cagemates and interaction though, which they get through their cagemates and humans. Every one of my rats, save for one female is hand tamed and will eat from my fingers. And that female has always been a biter but I keep her because she produces upward of 15 pups in every litter and is a very good mother.

Sorry if I offended anyone in this post but advertising a "pet" forum on a feeder forum is just as bad as us going over there and advertising a feeder forum on a "pet" forum. Its why I don't go to the pet rat part of Kingsnake any longer.
