"Ashy" headed sulcata tortoise

denisse Feb 11, 2004 10:28 PM

Hi all!
I have a sulcata who is about a year and a half old. I'm worried about his little head. The skin seems overly dry, I'm almost tempted to put some moisturizing lotion on the little guy. It's ashy looking, especially around his "eyebrow" area, where it almost looks cracked.
He doesn't act like he's sick. He's an eating machine and I let him walk around the house a lot to stretch his little legs, so he's active and very curious.
Anyone have an idea of what this could be? The closest reptile vet is over two hours away, should I set up an appointment anyways?

Hi, you're just describing dry skin, don't worry and DON'T put
any kind of cream at all on it. Especially since it's near the
eyes. What I did with mine when he was small was just dab some
water on my finger and dab it onto his head, gets him used to being petted a lot anywyas. Now (mine's over 50 pounds) I use
a spray bottle with warm water and mist his head. This condition
gets better in the summer when there's more humidity and they're
not sitting under artificial lighting all the time for heat. Mine's outside in his own building but he still is under artificial lights a lot right now for heat/basking away the winter! Again, please don't put any creams on him, just water.
Don't fret about it now, though it's winter - you should see the
dry skin on my feet! lol! niki

Thanks! I feel better now!
By the way, I LOVE your website! I was just checking out all the pictures of Teddy. His outdoor bachelor pad is gorgeous! I can't wait for my little guy to be all grown up just like yours.

...you'll have to get the cell phone and CD player for your tortoise too. And that's just for starters.
