A staple of superworms?

AgentOfLillith Feb 11, 2004 11:39 PM

Does anybody use a staple of superworms(zoophobas) instead of mealworms or crickets? How are the results? Would you recommend such a practice?

a staple of superworms. they do very well, as long as, like any feeder insect... you gutload them. my adults have been on supers as staple there entire lives (gutload them the same as mealies).... once any geckos i have get over 20-30 grmas i switch them to supers. i get good growth and out of all my leos only one refuses them and she is a cricket feeder. i start all my hatchlings on mealies (as a first meal) and then move on to supers once they reach the right size. maybe once or twice a month if i have the crickets i will offer them crickets but like i said not very often.. i also, like twice a month feed all of my geckos a nice meal of waxies and periodically offer them pinkies... some take pinkies some dont (i only offer and feed FT pinks no live ones)

now what to do with my mealworm colony, there's a good 2 thousand of them in there and a couple hundred beetles...

I would at very least keep the mealworm colony until you get the supers up and running. But also, I think I'd keep the mealies and mixt them in every now and then for a little variety. Just my thoughts =)

Wow Robin, I'm surprised that your geckos even eat FT pinks, I thought geckos won't eat anything that doesn't move.

for my mealie/super bedding i used to use chick mash or chick starter but it was too dusty and messed with my allergies. so i am making my own now. currently i am useing quaker oatmeal (not the quick cook recipe the regul;ar kinf), wheat germ and this powered baby food cereal mixture i can not remember the name but i;ll find out tonight when i go to work and get to you on it. i use potatoes and oranges for moisture and a few time s weekly feed them carrots, any greens collard or mustard, kale yellow and or green swuash and sometimes romaine lettuce... sometimes ill throw in a peach, apple or pear... occationally when brocholi is cheap i will buy that and give it to them too. i used a food processor... cutting all that up takes forever and chances are i would cut myself LOL plus russ bans me from using knifes when he is around (seeing as i have very poor eyesight)... he says it scares him LMAO.. if i can think of anything else ill let you know and ill check that baby food when im at work this evening

I feed all my adults an almost exclusive diet of supers. I am giving the females a shot of mealies in the morning and a good supper of supers with a waxworm or 2 each (the females only get the mealies and waxies breeding coming soon.) I feed two days then skip one because they will gloat themselves on supers. I have fed every type of food they will eat and find that good gut loaded supers go a long way. They are easy to raise, easy as mealies they just won't tolerate cold. I had a colony that would produce small enouph supers for younglings. Lost them all in a move out of the house due to the cold. Got one started though.
