What variety of corn is this?

JFDery Feb 12, 2004 08:41 AM

Hey you guys,

I've been holding on to this little guy for some reason, he's different. The problem is I can't really put my finger on what's so different about him, it's kinda hard to describe. The black outline of the saddles is missing and the saddles are fading more and more with time. I can't say he's plain hypo, he's got plenty of black pigment in his red as you can see from the picture. The belly is patternless. Reminds me somewhat of a baby bloodred, but I don't recall having any bloodred lineage in any of my corns and this is the only one hatched like that from that pair. The rest of that clutch are mostly, regulars and albinos. Also, one special albino (pictured) in the same clutch with washed out pink instead of white or orange. Both of them were very difficult to get started.

Is this a known cultivar or just an oddball?

Thanks for your comments, Jean

It looks to me like some very "diluted" bloodred genes ended up in this one. Just the way the corns saddles seem to lighten and blend a little along the sides makes me think bloodred. Of course it seems to be missing the usual grey head. However, I have heard from people who out cross bloods, that if you out-cross too much something seems to get lost in the equation and the gene seems to lose it's intensity. It would help if you had belly pics. No one can say for sure until you do some breeding trials, but out-crossed bloodred would be my guess.

Thanks Carol,

I'll try to remember to post belly pics. Your theory makes sense, maybe I'll hold on to it for a couple months still, just out of curiosity.

thanks again,

JEAN
