i just recently got at least 2 dozen of fruit flies from my backyard by putting some fruit in a jar. So my question is this, how can i, debilitate, or stop the flies from flying, i was wondering how could i make them wingless. Thx for the help

Tyco makes a Jr. Genetics Engineering Lab.
Just kidding. I don't think anyone has discovered a way to coax them into staying grounded.
Your better off buying flightless.
Was just banned by president Bush!
You can put them into the frig for five minutes TOPS to slow them down, but thats all it'll do. Buy some flightless ones from Eds fly meat. And if you do, don't mix the wilds with the ones from Ed, they will breed and you'll get flying ones all over again. When you do culture the FF use a good nylon fabric for the top of the culture, not paper towels or coffee filters. wild ones can get into a wet paper towel top as some of the Larve weight can cause some of the paper to rip a little, then you'll have the 2 breeding and get a culture of flies that you think mutated on you and flew away with your $30. Good luck, Maggie
choose the flightless from eds not the wingless. The flightless are more hardy when sprayed with water. The wingless can sometimes just be too fragile and will die before the animal gets to them. Also, if you need it to turn around quick get Melagonster(sp?). Hedei(sp?)takes at least one extra week then the first to get productions. Or you can get Buzzati from Flyculture.com. Half the size of Hedyi(how many different ways am I going to spell it?) and half the turn around time too. Maggie
Um, Maggie? Here's a silly question..wouldn't a wingless fly be flightless...or vice versa....I am missing something here...
Marilyn
Hey Marilyn: Not a silly question. I couldn't figure out the difference before I saw them on Eds site and talked to some Dart Froggers. As I understand it, there are winged ones that can't fly(flightless), then there are ones without wings at all(wingless-which is also unable to fly but minus a set of wings as well). Though both are Drosophila melanogaster, what I was told has shown to be true, the flightless vs. the wingless are a little hardier. Check it out here:

By the way, these guys have the BEST culture ever. Never crashes, never molds, never get mites! Sorry I confused you.
Maggie
Sorry, don't really mean to laugh at you (hahaha) but your post is pretty desperate! You cannot turn flying ff into flightless - and I don;t see a reality in capturing them and ripping their wings of
. And if you have actually released these in your house...well....you'll find out.
You need to buy/order flightless ff and if any of those mate with the wild ones they, too will begin to breed the fliers. Good luck!
