I finally got my hands on some mini mealworms from, of all places, Petco. I have raised normal mealworms in the past, so I'm positive that these are T. obscurus and not T. molitor as these mealworms are much darker. They're almost a brown color, rather than yellow with gold bands like small T. molitors.
Now, mealworms are a lot easier to raise than fruit flies. I know, I know. Everyone worries about impaction from the chitin, but is this REALLY a problem? I know of people who have raised hundreds of geckos a year feeding them nothing but mealworms and never had a problem with impaction. I'm sure very few of the insects they eat in the wild are soft. Does anyone have any documented cases of frogs dying because of mealworm impaction?
Also, the frogs took to them right away, so I doubt I'll have a problem getting them to eat mealworms.
