Mini mealworms

Arklier Feb 12, 2004 05:07 PM

I finally got my hands on some mini mealworms from, of all places, Petco. I have raised normal mealworms in the past, so I'm positive that these are T. obscurus and not T. molitor as these mealworms are much darker. They're almost a brown color, rather than yellow with gold bands like small T. molitors.

Now, mealworms are a lot easier to raise than fruit flies. I know, I know. Everyone worries about impaction from the chitin, but is this REALLY a problem? I know of people who have raised hundreds of geckos a year feeding them nothing but mealworms and never had a problem with impaction. I'm sure very few of the insects they eat in the wild are soft. Does anyone have any documented cases of frogs dying because of mealworm impaction?

Also, the frogs took to them right away, so I doubt I'll have a problem getting them to eat mealworms.

my advice to you would be to find some confused flour beetles.
they are really just mini meal worms. (or is this what you bought?) they never get very big, and im pretty sure they would never get so big your frogs couldnt handle them.
you can get a starter culture online, i personally buy all the insects i dont breed from WormMan.Com
Ive never had a problem with them, and my buggies always arrive alive. Also, as far as i know they have some of the best prices around, because the price listed includes fast shipping.
hope this helps!

About 5 weeks ago I was out of fruitflies (just back from vacation... ff cultures didn't make it... long story.) Anyway, since I cultured mealworms to feed my other animals, so I fed my frogs some tiny mealworms -- then the whole worms just came out with their pops.

I guess they just can't digest mealworms, even very small ones.
