geckocrazy Feb 12, 2004 10:02 PM

I know were not supost to by leos at petco or petsmart, but this petco i went to took decent care of there animals. They just got 30 leos and were only 20.00 with pals card. So needless to say i bought one. Its a hypo tang jungle(i think). I can already sex it(a male). I couldn't beleive they had some high end leos. I mean some of them were awesome. They had regs, albinos, jungles, tangs etc. If i can figure out how to post a pic i'll show you guys. Bryan

Sounds like you got a good deal. Just be sure to quarentine for a good 3 months in another room from any other animal. It's very important especially with chainstore leos. I used to buy from retail stores when I had a smaller collection but with the high incidence of diseases, there's no way I would ever take that chance now.
Good luck.

Make sure to get a fecal done ASAP so if the vet happens to find ANYTHING, you can get reimbursed for your vet bills by Petco. I found pinworms in mine and got remibursed for $150 for the repeated doses of panacur and fecals that had to be done (2 vet visits, 6 doses of panacur and 2 fecals).

Make sure you get it done BEFORE the warranty runs out (I think it's only 2 weeks), or you won't get reimbursed.

I see two sides of the picture. There is nothing wrong with this at a basic level if you are against killing things unnecessarily, or through cruelty. I do understand the position, however, that we should not buy at those stores as it supports a large number of stores to carry and abuse these animals if they keep selling - and to be honest, it is why i chose not to shop at those stores AT ALL. My female (and favorite leo) was rescued from a chain pet store in PA where i used to live so I cannot say I am sad she was purchased. However, she had a bad case of worms so i had to take her to the vet - SO - the message of getting a petco leo checked at a vet is VERY IMPORTANT. If I would not have purchased her she would have been abused to her death in that cage... It's a tough thing. Just be sure to quarantine and good luck!

Petco does get some really nice geckos in..I know where they get them from and they are GOOD quality.. Most of my colony (collection) has been started with leopard geckos from Petco.. I have worked there for many years..contrary to what ya hear, many petcos ARE good. I have several very nice tangerines, stripes, and hypos that have developed out of them.. I have never experienced any parasite issues with the geckos coming from this particular leopard gecko vendor. However regardless where you get a gecko from it should always be quarantined....it looks like your off to a good start.. if interested i could show you pics of how some geckos turned out..
