Superworms

Eyssk8r Jun 08, 2003 07:38 PM

I've read and heard rumors that superworms can eat there way through/out of the lizards stomach. Is this true? How do you feed superworms to your leos?

Thanx for any help.
Nate

it's totally untrue. 1st of all, the leo's chew up the worms, killing them, 2ndly, if they do some how survive the chewing, they will be killed by the stomach acids. feed them just as you would mealworms.

I have never ever heard of that, What ive heard is that they may bite your geckos' mouth, but that rarely happens. Also, you can cut the superworms' head, so they wont bite. The bad part about this is that the super die in a few minutes, so if the gecko doesn't eat it right away he wont then.

I've heard that rumor too. What I have seen though (not my lizards) was someone left superworms in a gecko enclosure. One of the worms started chewing on the tail of the gecko and made a small hole in the gecko.

Thank you all for the help!!!! It's great to know that it was only a rumor and not true. Thanx again.

no offense, but i dont believe that you've seen it. maybe i just didn't play it out in my mind right, but a mealworm or a superworm would not go out of it's way to bite a leopard gecko. these worms "hunt" by smell, not sight, as they have no functional eyes. so unless your friend rubbed a potatoe all over the lizards, they wouldn't attempt to bite it. could you explain the situation in more depth if you are sure that it happened?

I know that this can happen with crickets, its a known fact. Never heard of it happening with superworms, but its not impossible. When ever i feed my gecko, they sometimes crawl on her while they're in her cage, but they dont bite they just crawl over her toes and that. Not a good idea to leave them in the cage anyway as they can annoy geckos unless there in some sort of escape proof bowl.

the difference is, crickets have functional eyes, and are not only looking for food, they are also just pesky curious insects.

I see what u mean. But if supers hunt by smell wouldnt they be able to smell the gecko? i mean, in the wild its not like they go around smelling for patatoe, if they found a sleeping animal they'd probably try to eat it. I dunno, point is, dont leave ANY thing in the gcage unless its in a bowl. Period.

Actually it can happen.... Superworms and mealworms aren't just vegetarians but mostly omnivourous.. though its more for the liquid than the actual meat of an animal.. I haven't seen it on lizards but I did see it on a pinky left overnight in the food bowl of superworms for my Savannah Monitor. They ate right through the pinky... So its entirely possible for a superworm to try to eat through the tail of a lizard in its quest for liquid... My superworms climb up to their liquid source.. cause I put it on top of the egg carton to keep their main food from molding...

Total bunk, whoever started that one definately has had the forum busy with it for quite some time LOL. Stick you finger in their mouth and see if you think a super could survive that LOL. No seriously though most of the time this happens a leo is dead and not even noticed and a stray worm actually eats into it from the outside. I drop mine in in front of my leos they don't have long to live after that
