Yellowtail Cribo color and pattern differences...

Keith Hillson Feb 13, 2004 09:35 AM

I know there is not alot of Natural History stuff available on YT's (maybe there is ???) but is there any subtle or obvious color or pattern differences by locality ? I think locality YT's would be pretty cool to establish in captivity to those who like such things. Thanks for looking.

It seems that almost all of the recent imports are coming out of either Guyana or Suriname, with the bulk being from Guyana. Bobby Lee has had MANY wc specimens that he obtained from importers from these 2 countries.

Of them…he’s had everything from a snake that was almost solid slate colored with almost no yellow and a white belly, to an unbelievable little male that’s like 90% yellow, and the rest is light brown.

Some have banding, some don’t….some have black heads, some yellow.

The animal that Terry caught in Peru was a very nice light colored specimen…but that’s like 1000 miles from Guyana…I guess this is no help, but it seems there’s not a lot of info. to support any real morph differences from various regions. Guyana and Suriname is all we know from the importers…no detail is available as to exactly where the animals were found.

One thing that seems to be consistent lately is that most of the animals that are coming in are very dark dorsally, dark head, and a dark to bright yellow tail, mostly white ventrally. The lighter animals come occasionally, but the darker animals seem to be much more common.

Is there any history to the animals that you produced this year from that Chuck E male and the wild female ? That YT from you has really taken off by the way. Seems everyday it gets more and more yellow even the head on top seems to be getting yellow like the sides of its head. Its big as well at over 30" easy.

Regards,

Keith

The MALE (father) of your snake came from a guy named Tom Davis in Florida. He has a website…but I can’t seem to find it. He had a female that he had picked up at a show, and ordered a male from Chuck Elliott…he was on his waiting list and finally got a baby from Chuck in 1996 or 1997 I think…He raised the male for a few years and they copulated but she never laid.

I bought the pair…and the male impregnated my wc female, and the big female I got from Tom (a GORGEOUS SNAKE) also bred…but didn’t lay.

The FEMALE (mother) of your snake is a WC from Guyana. I bought off an ad on this site about 3 years ago, I can’t even remember the name of the importer, but they knew nothing about yt’s, and couldn’t tell me anything other than the shipment came out of Guyana. Another tricky thing is the SHIPMENT came from Guyana, so we assume the snakes were caught in Guyana. But the South American countries “open” and “close” for export during certain times of the year. If Guyana is the only country open for export, for example during a certain period, I think it would make sense that dealers from other countries would sell animals to Guyana for export. In that way of thinking…there’s NO WAY to know where the imports are really from.

Anyway, she was skinny when I got her but in decent shape. I wormed her and she started on f/t chicks. I had a hell of a time getting her on rats. It was almost a year before she ate anything but chicks, or small rats that I sewed to the ass-end of a chick ( a f/t chick of course!)

After about a year I finally got her on medium rats and she really took off and put on weight.
After 2 years with me…I cycled them and they bred in mid-November of 2002.

Here's a pic of a male 03 YT produced by Don Bordner.
