when you say she can't use her tongue; Does she try to launch it? is it hanging out of her mouth?

The tongue can get injured or sprained. Sometimes the tongue will heal in a few days, and in the worst case, will be permanently damaged. If the tongue gets stuck to something (like glass) and doesn't retract or if it gets tangled around something (like a branch) injury can be the result.

Let me know more..

I am not an expert but sounds like MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease). I would get her to a herp vet ASAP. For more help here you need to give info on her setup and care:

type and duration of light
humidity level - and how does she drink
temps
food
dust?
gutload?
her age
cage size
etc.

in the mean time, read these articles and try and hand feed her.

she cant shoot as in she tries to stick her toung out but it wont go or it goes out a tiny bit. i have a vvery big wire mesh cage dont remeber the demensions but it is more then enough. i dust once a week and put a calcium supliment/de contaminator in their water...made for reptiles. i have my uv light and 100w light bulb 12 hours a day the temp is 75-80 during the day and about 65-70 at night with a humidity level of about 30-50%

dr_octagon Feb 13, 2004 11:51 AM

i have a commercial gutload on my crix but i feed them a combo of wax worms crix and superworms.....she is only about 5 or 6 months old

I originaly thought MBD just as Lele said, and would get her to a herp vet. Another side note, does the humidity seem kinda low for a jax? I thought that they liked higher humidities. Just a thought. I would take her to a vet, because we can speculate, but without seeing her, thats all that we can do. Good luck!

Tounge problems are often caused by lack of vitamin B...

You should also mist the cage once or twice a day and not only once a week...

didnt say i msit once a week...said i dust once a week

There seems to be a lot of this going around. I'm having the same problem with my male Jacskson's. The consensus seems to be that this is caused by either over or under supplementing. I read that this can be caused by the overuse of Calcium, but no one seems to agree on anything. Seems like everyone has a different opinion as to what causes this.

How much calcium have you been giving? If it is A LOT, that may be the problem. Excess Calcium makes muscles sluggish (I forgot why exactly, but my vet told me this).

So, I hate to say it, but there is no easy explanation that I know of.

dr_octagon Feb 13, 2004 02:06 PM

there is no way i could be undersupplimenting them. the only thing i am confused by is i am giving my male the same thing and he has no trouble. her front arms seem very weak she has trouble grabbing branches...is this maybe why she is hanging upside down by just her back legs????? maybe she needs to rest them. should i cut out her suplimenting for a little while?

lele Feb 13, 2004 04:18 PM

Seems as though everyone is resonding to the tongue problem but you had mentioned in your first post about weakness that is why I said MBD. Now that you eleaborate on that aspect I would definitely say get her to a vet! If it is MBD it can often be reversed but you need a vet to get you started AND to see if that is what it is.

How does she get calcium? You said calcium in her water? What is it you dust with? just vitamins? Do you have a herp vet (I hope so). You mentioned UV light but is it UVB? What brand?

As for male/female the females have a higher need for calcium for reproduction (even not bred they will develop and lay eggs) and b/c we feed our chams a lot and they grow fast they need calcium so their bones can develop normally when they are young.

You may want to cut down on the calcium a bit and see if there is any improvement. But don't expect fast results.

Are you keeping them well hydrated?

dr_octagon Feb 13, 2004 05:05 PM

yes they are well hydrated...i spray a few times a day most of the time the go up to the nossle and i spray in their mouth for about 2 minutes so they are drinking alot. i also spray their plants down as well

lele Feb 13, 2004 05:41 PM

Luna, my veiled, became receptive at 7 months. I don't know how early jax can begin to reproduce, but that is all the more reason to get her checked out. If you don't have a vet here is a site listing them by state

no she isnt gravid i have not allowed them to breed yet

lele Feb 14, 2004 10:15 AM

as I stated, they will develop and lay eggs without breeding. Not sure how early it is possible for jax.

jax lay live young so there is no egg development

epollak Feb 14, 2004 04:34 PM

Yes, they're live bearers but they can and DO suffer reproductive problems very much like oviparous chams. Everyone her is just BSing. Aside from her getting too much calcium, everything else is conjecture. Only a vet can help you.

lele Feb 14, 2004 04:56 PM

Ed,

the eggs/membrane develop internally - no?

Who's BSing? A few of us suggested a vet immediately (which the "dr." still has not said he would or wouldn't do or if he has one) and I think my question about her being gravid was a valid one...you know how these thread can spin off into tangents.

Some of you the respondants did, indeed, suggest vets.... but some didn't. I just wanted to make sure the original poster got the point. Sorry if I offended anyone.

And yes, you are, of course, correct. The eggs do develop but they develop internally. They just don't calcify. The original poster seemed to think that dystocia wasn't posdsible in an ovoviviparous cham. I was just trying to say that jax are as prone to reproduction-related death as an oviparous cham.

Ed- No, you didn't really offend me I just wasn't sure who/what you were referring to. At this point you an I are probably having a private conversation (LOL!) and the original poster has stopped reading - this too often happens. Hopefully he took his poor cham to the vet
