Question; Egg Developement

jgriffi Feb 13, 2004 10:54 AM

I can feel eggs forming in my female, she shed about two weeks ago. Was that the shed before she lays the eggs or just a normal shed? If it's not the pre shed how long before she lays the eggs? If it is the pre shed how long before she lays them?
She is 1800g, and the male is 900g and they are hets for albinos. I'm claiming two albinos when they hatch, I plan on beating the odds on their first time. Will be trying to sell the others real cheap, I'm only trying to get the albino from the group.
Thanks for your help

Did you witness ovulation?

If you didn't then chances are she is nowhere near laying if at all. Don't make the mistake that just because you breed two balls together, you will be guaranteed eggs. For your sake I hope that you do. This is what to look for.

Look for your female to be spending increased time in the cool spot. She does this when growing folicles. Pay close attention and try to observe ovulation. This is marked by a mid-body swelling. It looks as though she swallowed a huge rat. Ovulation usually is visible for a day. Once she ovulates she will go into a prelay shed (sheds on avarage 16 days after ovulation) and generally lay her eggs 27 - 28 days after her shed.

Good luck!

Hey Marcus, how often (if ever) have you observed that a female NOT go through pre egg shed before dropping her clutch?

Markus Jayne Feb 13, 2004 07:09 PM

Never. Every female that has laid for me has had a pre-lay shed. I've also recorded every ovulation...33...the last 2 years.

You can generally observe females building towards ovulation.
