FEEDERMOUSE Feb 13, 2004 12:24 PM

a friend of mine has used ceeder cigar boxes as hides for some of his snakes for years ,now just to know, theese boxes are made of spanish ceader and contain no chemical's i figured these wor ok to use cause its not the same as ceader shavings that contain chemicals and is made of regular old ceader which is a really dry ceader wood...,i know my friend has had no ill afects useing these boxes and his snakes really love them from what i can see.

It has nothing to do with chemical additives. It's the natural oils in the cedar that many snakes will actually find to be toxic. I am a very avid cigar smoker, and I order by the box often. I have lots of cigar boxes lying around, and I would not DREAM of using one as a hide. There are so MANY great and easy things to use...don't push your luck with cedar of any kind. It's all fine and well that your friend does not think that his reptiles have suffered any ill effects (YET???!!). Just don't do it. It's one of those many rules that you are just better off NOT breaking, even if you think it "might be OK". Duffy
