Iguanas and other pets in the house?

thomaslora Feb 13, 2004 02:31 PM

Can I have an Iguana (inside it's own cage, of course) and other pets (like a cat, birds, fishes) in my house?

Thomas.

fishes don't matter...i woudln't think...bird are noisey and I hate them...(just my opinion...don't know if the iguana would care) and some cats get used to adult iguanas around but cats would kill a juvi or baby.

You have to keep an eye. The best way it to give your iguana his own area...that can have a door closed or a place you can monitor him while he hangs out...just be careful.

I have 3 Belgian Shepherds, an Australian Shepherd, a large cat, and a bearded dragon in my house along with Tempest, he's fine with all of them as long as they are on one side of the glass and he is on the other. He eyeballs everyone, but as long as he is up high he's fine.

I was wondering the same thing... my ig's a free roamer & I want to get a puppy. My ig's abut 4 ft long & still very agressive in his breeding season, so I am wondering how the will react to eachother.

I have 3 bettas in 3 seperate bowls in my apartment & Porfi doesn't even see them. They are atop counters so he couldn't reach them if he tried. I also have my water dragon tank & beardie tank within his view. He knows they are there but doesn't go near them. The beardie is scared to death of him when she sees him, but the water dragon head bobs & puffs up.

We picked up a free roaming iguana a week ago because he had broken the leg of their puppy. The puppy wanted to play and the iguana didn't so he whipped the puppy with the tail. The iguana is 4'7" with a very wide powerful tail and it broke the puppies leg in two places. They decided they wanted the puppy more. We have other pets/rescues birds, fish, bearded dragons, and 2 terriers. As long as the iguanas have their own space they are fine. Some of the juvies especially seem to show more stress if they see the others and the adults can sometimes be more aggressive but since the iguanas each have their own large roomy cage it is fine.

So I'm sure you will have some that will say a free roamer with a dog is fine but in my OPINION it's not okay unless the iguanas roaming is limited to one or a couple rooms where the puppy or cat as the case may be does not have access to.

Shortydsm,

My dogs and my igs get along just fine. Alot of people think that they should be kept completely seperate. Some people don't have the luxury of doing this either because of space or convenience or both. I have the space, but it is nice to interact with my igs knowing that my dogs aren't being ignored (as my one dog is very sensitive to that type of thing). So I introduced them. My older dog is used to everything being out around him by now that he doesn't really even pay attention. The younger one does however. If you are going to get a puppy and you still want your ig to free roam, here is my suggestion: It is better to introduce the puppy to the ig once he gets settle in. Let the ig check out the puppy from afar at first. Then make sure that for a long time after the initial introduction that you are right there with both of them for any up close and personal intros. This way, it is a more controlled situation. Give treats to both after a successful encounter. Just make sure when you are introducing them that you are their, paying attention. Good luck.

Kittens and puppys would scare and chase an iguana if it was out with the animals. I let my igs around my older cat and he just looks at them. Our kitten tries to chase them. I have read that if a cat or dog sit and just look at them while they are in their cage it will stress them out. Which won't be good for them so you would have to watch out for that. Here is a pic. of my 2 year old ig and my 5 year old cat. The cat won't bother the bigger iguanas, but will go after smaller ones.

I have a lot of different species or animals in my house and have never had a problem. I have even socialized some of them, although I do not suggest doing this. Another thing you can do if you are interested in reptiles/amphibians is start a reptile room. Just a suggestion.

Thanks all of you for your answers. I was asking 'cause I want to adopt a little iguana, but my wife has a cat, fishes and birds. I'm thinking about giving the iguana his own room.

Thomas.

My freeroaming iguana shares a room with 2 hedgehogs, and other pets in the house (who he does not contact with) include ferrets, turtles, and fish
