leofreak Feb 13, 2004 03:15 PM

My babys BD(3 months old) devours supers. I got small ones they are about this long| | and this wide'' maybe a little less wide. My question is can i keep feeding him those size supers? He doesn't like crix too much or veggies. So can I?

He is probably refusing crix and veggies becuase of the worms. They are addicting, like crack for BD's, and we all know crack kills.

This is the first time we was killing these. And he eats like 4 crix a day.

I didn't quite understand what you were trying to say.

You must have had doubts about it, or you wouldn't have started this thread. You should have waited before buying them if you weren't sure.

Some vets know more about reptiles than others. They don't always know from experience as many herpers do. The vet that advises my local petsmart apparently thinks it's A-OK to feed full grown crickets to baby chameleons, and have them drink from a bowl on the floor of the cage.

btw, I'm not intending to bash your vet, they may be very good. I'm just saying you can't always take their word as gospel when it comes to exotic husbandry.

My opinion doesn't go far around here, but here it is anyway. If the supers are that small, I would say they do not contain enough chitin to harm your little guy. That may be why the vet recommended the small ones. I would rather see a young beardie eating something instead of nothing. BUT you definately want to try to find some other live prey that makes the little guy happy. Because if he does get addicted to the supers, that is all he is going to want to eat later on.... when they are big and do contain high amounts of chitin. I have fed large superworms to my adult dragons about once a week for a long time and have never had any problems, besides one male throwing them up one time. Basically because he almost gorged himself on them. It is a good idea to vary their diet. And you deserve much credit for taking your little guy to the vet. There are so many people out there with herps that don't bother. Try talking to your vet about it as well. Ask him to do some research and look into it. You may be surprised. He may enjoy learning some new herp info!!

And you may want to try to offer mealworms, which look alot like little super worms, but have less chitin!!
