ESU light?

lele Feb 13, 2004 04:36 PM

Hi,

I recently got an ESU strip light that came with a UVB 7% bulb. Is this sufficient for a brown anole? I had to separate her from my two greens and ran out of lights and fixtures so I used this. Everyone else (greens, etc.) has a repti-sun 5.0. I will be shipping them all to FL as soon as it warms up to set them free but that'll be another month or so. I have a repti-sun on order, but wondered about these 7% bulbs. The guy said they are equivalent to repti 5.0 but....I have to wonder.

thanks!

lele-

I don't have a UVB meter, but from what I've heard from people who DO, is that that particular bulb is not the best choice. If it's brand new, will be used for only a month or so, and the anole has close access to it (6" or so), then it might be fine - especially if you dust food with a D3 supplement. I know that it doesn't produce as much UVB as a Reptisun 5.0., but I don't know if that's from of degradation or if it's just less to begin with or what.

Hi Torey,

Yeah, that's sort of my thinking as repti-sun is "the best." She is alone on a 10 gal (only tank size I had left and I had to get her out of green's tank) and her branches go right to the top. She's always been a screen hanger as well LOL! I think I'll stick with it since she will only be with me for a short while longer. I just hope the stress of shipping them to FL doesn't kill them!

Let me share my experience on shipping and anole to arrive alive (I shipped my Anole in the Winter time BTW with this method.)

Materials, 1 box, Styrofoam board ¼ inch thick to line box with, Packing materials such as Styrofoam peanuts, 1 Ziploc disposable sandwich container. Tape

Cut out the Styrofoam and line the bottom of the box.
Now cut out Styrofoam for all four walls.
When ready to ship open heat packs and line the bottom with it. Depending on what size heat packs you have is how many you will need. Hand warmers and Feet warmers are not enough. You can find larger heat packs at almost any sporting goods store. If you have the larger heat packs, I found to keep a temp of around 80 - 90 you needed 4 heat packs (This is in 20 Degree weather so adjust If it is much colder or warmer)
Now poke a few holes in the disposable sandwich container I poked holes all throughout the top and one of each corner of the bottom of the container
Line the bottom of the box in packing material and put Ziploc container In it (Well put the anole in container of course) and do not let the container touch the heat packs. Your anole could, and probably will, get burned if it is touching.
Now take the rest of the peanuts and make sure his container is stable to prevent to much jostling.
Tape it up.

Now here is where I differ with others. I took a pencil and worked a hole in each top corner of the box just enough for air to circulate. Some say you do not need to do this and that is fine if that is what they think, but I found my heat packs were not getting enough oxygen to keep warm.

To ship I used Airborne express due to the fact they are the only ones that “Allow” shipping of some animals. On the box instead of writing Live Animal Anole I wrote Live animal Green Frog. I did this because they do not like to ship reptiles (Many reptiles are very expensive and they do not want the liability) They treated my package with the utmost care and my anole actually arrived in Florida Green!!!

If you are shipping in the spring or fall you can get away with no heatpacks. In the summer use a cold pack

I wish I had pictures, but hopefully this will help you.

This is a HUGE help. I was just looking at my poor critters and wishing I could ship them now. I was going to post with shipping questions and poof - here you are!

I still have a styro lined box that some leaf chams came in last spring so it is perfect. I will be shipping three so I assume I should give them each their own container. Did you put tissue or something in the container with them so they have something soft?

My only other concern is that the two greens are not in the best of shape meaning that they are not in peak condition and I wonder if shipping will stess them more OR will they just sleep b/c it will be dark?

thanks!

I just called Airborne (which is now DHL) and when they asked what I would be shipping and I told them they said they wouldn't ship it...now what? Do they x-ray the box?

The reason they say they will not ship anoles is they put them in the same class as a 100 - 2000 dollar lizzards and do not want he liability. Put Live Animal - Frog on the outside of the box and they will be fine.

Sorry for the late reply but I was in New York on Friday.

Yes put each in their own container. I put nothing in the containers. Just make sure they have enough room to turn around and get comftrable. With 3 containers you might need more heatpacks....but then again maybe not due to the warm weather we have (in the North East at least.)

As far as them not being in the best shape.... Unless you can provide them their own enclosures they are not going to get any better.

I replied to your other message first but will also put it here. On the outside of the box put. Live Animal - Frog. DHL DOES ship frogs. They will not ship reptiles of any type due to most reptiles being such a huge liability. (aka 100 to 2000 dollars per reptile) Anoles are an exception to this rule and instead of getting one of them to admit they will ship anoles (they will but good luck trying to get them to admit it) it is best just to call them frogs.

thanks again. I might go with UPS. right now i am looking for a local source for heat packs, None of the sporting good type places have any besides the little foot and hand warmers which I know will not be sufficient. I'll probably have to order online and delay shipping.

another question...One of them, Jaida, I have been feeding repta-aid, which of course stresses her more from the handling, etc. Should I make sure they each have a good meal in them before travel or is it not worth the added stress?

thx

LL Bean carries the larger warmers and most people do not know this. Another place that might also carry them is a local Ski Shop if you have one. Also....My recomendation is not to use UPS unless you have to. Though I admit to no personal experience with UPS when I was looking around on the web for how to ship reptiles almost all said not USPS or UPS use either FedEx or DHL (Airborn). Now with that said, I also found people that said they had no problems with UPS, in fact some major reptile sellers use them. So, I leave that up to you

Good Luck on shipping!
