Somebody gave me a turtle

heartmountain Feb 13, 2004 04:42 PM

Ok, so I have this Malaysian Box Turtle now, it was either me or turn it loose. Turtles really aren't my thing so I'm wondering how much it is worth if I were to sell it. My daycare lady has a granddaughter that would like it and she's willing to trade daycare time for whatever it's value is. It's 2 years old and about 6" in diameter.

Thanks,
Sean

it's worth giving it to someone who can care for it..

It's terrific that you've taken it in, and doing everything you can to assure its future health and wellbeing by placing it with someone who'll give it proper care would be best for everyone.
Unless the daycare provider wants a pet turtle, versus the child, I'd think that one over. After all, its the adult that is going to have to actually care for the pet.
A local Herp Association or Rescue may be able to provide assistance or suggestions in screening potential recipients.
Good luck with it.

Releasing it is likely illegal, as it is a non-native species.

www.chelonia.org is a good place to find care sheets. Also try www.anapsid.org to see if there is a herpetological society or rescue near you that might take it.

Sean,

if you let the turtle go in the wild it WILL DIE. these turtles
DONOT hibernate. if you live where it freezes then it needs to goto someone who has experience with turtles.

give it to someone who realizes that turtles can live way past 100 yrs old, need an expensive UVB bulb, AND a heat lamp. That they need a specific diet. From what I've seen online they are only like 100-200 dollars depending on where you are from.
