Hmmm... did they breed?

hhawk20005 Feb 13, 2004 06:59 PM

Hi, i just put my female in with my male, and left them alone for a while. NOw my male is usually very calm, and likes to be held. When i walked back to their cage (about 15 min later) she was half in the hide, and he was out of it. as soon as he saw he, he jerked his head to the side (whacking it on his hide) and ran in the hide w/ her. I have since seperated them, but i was just wondering if this means that they may have mated. Thanks for any help you can give me

There is really no telling if they breed or not. You should keep an eye on them; we wouldn’t want your guy whacking himself into any more cage furniture. Someone once said of males: ‘there is only enough blood in the body for one head to work at a time.’ I guess that holds true for geckos too. Best of luck with your breeding project!

A week is a bit too early to tell. Eggs should be visible after 2 weeks, and she should lay them a week or two after that. Of course, those numbers aren’t set in stone, just a good rule of thumb.

If you normally don’t keep them together, I’d advise putting them together again tomorrow, and watching a bit more carefully. If your female bites the male back hard, give her at least a week break, and try again. If she is receptive, she will just sit still and let the male do his thing.

LOL how true Dave. My big male "Barney" knows which head is important though. You can bring as many people as you like by his enclosure, when he wants to breed thats all he thinks about. Some of my females aren't into being exhibitionists and they will try to crawl away. I say try cuz Barney will actually hold them there, he is so much bigger than they are. He has 3 females in his enclosure and he literally jumps from one to another. What a STUD.

Just joking! It's a song. Watch them when you put them together. I only have experience with my one male that I got from Keli at hisss. But he is very aggressive, within seconds he's on the girls necks and is VERY convincing. There's only one thing on his mind and he doesn't care who is watching.
