Interesting wood turtles. My guess is they're from New Jersey.
TC
Or maybe Pennsylvania? Nice pictures, I especially like that muhlenbergii habitat. Keep them coming. Hopefully I'll have some wood turtle photos to share this summer.
Andrew
Maybe some like this, Andy...

Cheers...TC.
Hey Terri those are some sharp pics. I havent had any luck photographing or even finding a wood turtle yet. Im gonna try again this year, but it seems I dont find anything good whenever I have my good camera with me
Shawn, you didn't say what state you're in, but I'm assuming it's in the East somewhere. That means wood turtles would be a real rarity for you, whereas they are fairly common locally where I live.
Hope to see some pics of those bog and spotted turtles this year, haha. I love spotted turtles and have never seen one in the wild. I'll be looking in an area where a couple DOR's showed up last year, and I hope to see one this year.
Cheers...TC.
Ive caught quite a few. My first one I ever caught swam right up to me in a lake. It didnt seem like the usual habitat though, so I assume someone probably released it. As far as wood turtles are concerned Im in NE PA now and I am yet to find one. Its very hilly terrain here, so that probably doesnt help. I have noticed even painted turtles arent all that abundant around here (we used to find them in jersey swimming around holes in the ice). Last year I caught a milk, smooth green, ringnecks, garters, red bellies, toads, and a bunch of enormous spotted salamanders which I had never found before. I did catch a crazy looking snake that I assume was a garter. It had an almost non existant pattern though with a white head, and a reddish rainbowish blended coloring that was kinda just melded together. It was definitely pregnant if it was a garter, and it was sunning on a rock when I found it. Have you found anything similiar? I have to find the film to develop, since I did let it go. I know it sounds crazy, but i have the pictures (somewhere) to prove it.
Yeah... just like those. In about 3 more months I'm going to start putting in some serious hours on the rivers.
Can't wait.
Just a few pics to show some of the habitat in the area. Rattlesnake Creek is a neat area for birds as well as for turtles...
There were sightings of the endangered Kirtland's warbler along this creek. We also saw a few turtles here. Hope you don't mind, Andy, but I wanted to show the scenery..lol...
Some upland habitat...
Found this turtle on the road on our way home crossing in the middle of nowhere in a dry area...
TC
You could not find a wood turtle if it walked up and defecated on your face(as improbable as that seems). How is it going bro? Staying warm up north? Need to get back down here for some herping! Andy

Wait and see, Andy, this is the year. Not staying very warm here, it was -11 F this morning. I'm coming down during spring break though, March 26--April 3. I've got some herping in the works with Brandon. Maybe we can get out some. More on that later... take it easy,
Andrew
Nice. I will be "legal" by then so I will be out prowling the town and hitting up the clubs haha. Should be a good time. We need to get some herping up though. BTW, I saw snow for the first time that I can remember this past weekend. It was awesome. I built a snowman. I shouldn't have said that part...TAke it easy bro. Andy

Snow, eh? Must be getting chilly down there. It's been warming up a little here lately, we had our first thaw in a couple months the other day. I'll definitely be in touch soon. Take it easy,
Andrew
Sorry I've been busy lately. These pictures were taken in PA.
I'm going out this weekend to search for some Eastern Mud Salamanders (First day of field herping for 2004).
I looked back through my records, I found 62 NA wood turtles this year in PA, 23 Eastern Boxies, 7 spotteds, and 2 bog turtles. These are the only ones I documented. The other turtles I found a ton of...(snappers, stinkers, painteds, etc).
This year I'm gonna concentrate on spotted turtles and bogs...I found out this past year that there's no shortage of NA woods in this state.
