Possibly upset bearded dragon??

SoCalSerenity Jun 08, 2003 08:58 PM

My bearded dragon Rage has always been a very good eater! Always loved greens and crickets and pellets... Well about 3 weeks ago he got a new cage an 80 gallon up from a 40 gallon...he was doing fine but now he wont eat not greens or crickets or pellets or even wax worms!!!we even tryed baby food becuase he used to love it but he just licks it once and walks away same with the crickets he will lick one and walk away and just now with greens he licked it acted like if he was going to eat it then spit it out and the pellets he just licks one and you can guess ... he walks away or hides under his logs. I dont know what to do hes getting skinnier he used to be my only dragon but then he moved into this group home i work in and i dunno maybe hes depressed hes not the only one becuase out of no where he will jump and get a black beard out of no where... what can i do??!! i always try to feed him first before any other dragons but still nope he wont eat its making me very upset and he has a clean bill of health , any help or ideas would be great thanks

Maybe he just isn't used to his new house yet. He may be overwhelmed by all the space he has. Maybe try covering the sides? Also, are the temps the same as what he had before? My beardie didn't eat for a few days in his new cage, but wasn't losing weight. If he is losing weight, you of course he more to be concerned about. Try keeping the food right where he is most of the time. That did seem to help mine, but other wise I don't have much to suggest. I hope things get better though.

Did I understand that you have moved him in with other dragons?

socalserenity Jun 09, 2003 07:00 AM

he is in the same room with 2 other dragons ones a baby ones a female sub adult in the other rooms there 3 dragons to a room so i put him in this one becuase there was only two so i will try to cover his cage thanks for the help

Ah, okay, yes that could be affecting him. We have several adults and there is one male and female that we can not let see any other dragons as they become obsessed with watching and waving to them and forget to eat..... and let me tell you, they have great memories as both continue to go to the only spot in their tank they could see the other and sit there wathcing, even though they are blocked from each others view.

My beardie Popeye is/was doing the same thing. I moved him into the garage. I believe his stress is due to a few things:

1) the change in scenery. Both the interior and the view are different.

2) View of a subadult bearded dragon. Popeye is an adult male and is territorial. I covered his cage.

3) reflection. I moved his heat lamp closer to the glass and there is a background on it. I think he can see his own reflection which is causing him stress.

4) inadequate lighting. A larger cage requires more light if it is in a dim room. I had to add a fluorescent to his cage to make sure he knew it was time to get up.

I plan on building him a white melamine cage once I am done with finals this quarter. Hopefully that will help. If your dragon can see other dragons that is most likely the problem.

i agree with georgio, seeing the other dragons might also stress him a lot. You could have a fecal done, but it doesnt seem like parasites are the problem, i think it is the stress of moving and then seeing other dragons.

I'm just wondering if his cage stays covered all the time? I know you're trying to help solve the problem of him seeing the other dragons and others seeing him ... but you could be creating a new problem... I've tried this and it only worked temporarilly for me. In the long run, the beardie that I covered got lonely and stressed. I've realized that beardies are highly intelligent and love to watch and study us! Without this daily interaction, they cease to thrive. Just my two cents worth.

Is there some other place you can house this beardie where he won't be seen?

that looks good, how far away are the other cages? That probably will solve the problem...jw can the other dragons see each other too? they are so funny, all have theyre little qwirks...like Ralph (my male) cannot be in any seeing range with any female, or he will NOT eat at ALL, only bob his head ALLL day long...lol...and one of my old females could not be in the same proximity as Ralph either cuz she got rejected (i never thought Ralph would reject a lady, lol) he just never bobbed his head at her and never tried to mate with her, whenever she saw him she would bury herself and just have small peepholes in the bran, lol.. it was weird...i sold her a while ago...well i hope everything works out ...your dragon just seems to be jealous and also pretty stressed i geusws..sorry bout my rambling lol....good luck!
