How deep is sufficient for egg laying?

Fill up to almost the top. Leave maybe 1 inch or so, so that the female can get in there comfortably.

I cut the hole in the side of mine about 1.5 inches up on the side and put about and inch of nesting material in so they don't drag it out all over.
