incubator temps....air temp or egg bedding temp?

RedQuake Feb 14, 2004 12:41 AM

It occured to me as i was looking at a picture of a home made incubator where to place the thermometer probe. Is it the temperature of the vermiculite where the egg sits that is of most importance or the air temp of the entire container? Is there a concern that the temperature of the vermiculite might become higher than the air temp?

I thankyou for your input

I beleive that it is the temp of the air but, I never thought to ask the question before.

try it and find out i guess. I was concerned that if your container that the eggs are in is sitting in the water(within another larger container i mean-homemade incubator) and the water temp is say 82 i'm just wondering if the air temp would be the same and if the substrate for the eggs would contain more heat.

Thankyou for replying.

I think that you are supposed to have some water in the bottom of the tank then something to have the containerabove the water this will get the humidity and help with heat. I don't think that the container with the eggs is to be submersed in the water. If I am wrong let me know.

Sorry i meant that the container with the eggs is inside another container that sits in the tank with the water. Whether above the water or floating in isn't what i was concerned about. More to whether or not the egg bedding will hold more heat than the air. Because the bottom of the larger container is closer to the heated water, i'm concerned that the bottom of the egg container would get hotter as well. Thankyou again for replying. I guess i shouldn't be freaking out so much now seeing as i don't have any eggs to incubate just yet. And by the time i do i'll have a hovabator i'm sure hehehe.
