sliding glass?

errtu1 Jun 08, 2003 09:16 PM

I'm building new cages for my colubrids, and I dont know what to do about an entrance. I'd really like to use sliding glass, but i'm having trouble finding aluminum tracking. Everyone said, "go to lowes or home depot, they have it." After about 6 trips, at three different places, no one has it. Home Depot had plastic tracking, but it was REALLY thin, and looked like it'd crack easily. The place that cuts glass sells tracking, but it's $11/foot. Each cage needs 6ft of tracking(3 on top, 3 on bottom). That's WAY too expensive.

So what do you guys suggest? Know of anywhere specific i can buy aluminum tracking? Or should i use hinged doors instead? And if I do that, what side should the hinges be on?

Thanks,
Ron Nocera

I get all of my track from www.outwater.com The plastic track imo is plenty strong enough I would suggest the 1/8 ich wide track and edgeing the glass to prevent escapes

That is a super sweet cage. Is it made from melamine. I am planning on building some cages out of MDF. Then my step dad is going to spray the inside with polyurathane and paint the outside. Do you think the track will hold up on burms and retics. Again very nice cage.

It is made out of expanded pvc

You can use acrylic or glass. Outwater is the place to go, but you must buy tracks in bulk. The price is still worth it though.
Here are pix of 3' & 4' cages I built with plastic sliding doors.
Paint used is called Milk Paint (non-toxic) and sealed with salad bowl finish (also non-toxic). You can stack them if you omit the top screen area.
