I'm getting another one!!!

DemonFrog Feb 14, 2004 04:37 PM

Well about a year ago i thought that i would be the last person on earth to get a corn snake. then, a few months ago i took my mom to a herp show (well she took me, i can't drive) and the next day i went to a breeders and picked up the corn pictured below, well now today on valentines day my sis and mom handed me a card that tells me that they will let me have another corn and that they have set up a meeting with the same breeder to let me pick up another corn. well...um...eep i'm happy but i am fearing the end of the world because this is the last thing that i expected to happen. sorry for ranting but i am so happy and just needed to vent some gas before i go insane.

Good for you!! I never thought I would get into snakes either but now I have 4. 2 corns, a milk and a python, of all things! I just love them. The one pictured is very pretty. Don't let it be the end of the world! It's exciting...and they are adicting. I want more but running out of room.

Snakes are very addictive, and soon you will be thinking of how and where to build a rack system, so you can add more beautiful snakes to you collection. Congrats on that GREAT Valentines day gift. Post pics.

Congrats DemonFrog!! Now that is an original Valantine's Day gift. Certainly a lot less fattening than chocolate So which morph you hoping to get? The charcoal or the Aztec?

DemonFrog Feb 15, 2004 06:40 AM

I don't think he has charcoals or aztecs but he doed have a sibling of that snow that i really wanted from the petstore we'll see later tonight. and i don't really have much more room for snakes unless i can turn my closet into a rack, but even now i have to modify my room a bit

Have you considered waiting for another herp show? That way you would have many more varieties to choose from.

Another thought that I had is that if you buy a sibling, then I wouldn't breed them together, if that is ever in your future thoughts. Whereas if you get another kind of cornsnake, you would have that possibility open for a later thought.

Just my opinion.

can't they? I thought that's how people got the F2's etc...was by breeding siblings together. I sure hope you can, I plan on breeding my two het snows together in a couple years, and they're full sibs.

Buy the way, Congrats DemonFrog! Might as well start building the rack now

Siblings can breed but it is not good pratice as it can cause defects in the young and other problems. and i do not plan on getting a sibling i meant that they were from the same guy he has like 2 pairs of corns and the snows he has are from a diff pair and i am thinking about getting the snow. eenyway.

Yes you can breed siblings and offspring back to the parents also.
I am not sure how far you can go without needing to introduce new blood but a few generations should be fine.

Well i got HIM and he is a nice unrelated snow corn who to me looks a little unusual, i can't really explain his differentness but i will try to post some pics of him after he is settled in. I AM keeping him in the 20gal long with my other corn snake for now because i do not have another big tank. i know i am a sinner but i think they should be ok for a little while and i can seperate them putting him into a small container if problems arise. when i got him and tried to take pics of him (fuzzy pics) he rattled his tail in the aspen and i agree it does scare you when you first hear it because you have no clue what the heck it is. he looked like he was gonna strike at me but he didn't and he seems a nice enough snake that only needs to be handled a bit to get used to me. sorry for ranting but you understand because you all have corns and understand how happy i am. ty for your support

P.S. no pics yet

Glad you know that you "should" separate them as soon as you can. I know you got them from a breeder, and most likely they're both healthy....but you never know when they're this young how they'll deal with it. The rattling is kinda fun I think. These little tiny guys think they're foolin us

(about the inbreeding...seems to me that 7 generations keeps popping into my head for some reason. Like maybe I read or heard from someone that you don't usually see ill-effects of inbreeding until the 7th or 8th generation of continual inbreeding. I could have just pulled that out of the air though.)
