can anyone identefy this iguana???

wesley928 Feb 14, 2004 06:10 PM

when this iguana was a baby he looked just like the rest of the babys, bright green. the others, which were all the same size as him, are all about 2ft. long, but he is only about 15in. (due to a once broken tail, but now grown back) and he is very dark. I have no idea what type he is, so if you can give me any information on him it would be most appriciated.
thanks

Just a normal green iguana...different colors for different parts of south america...husbandry issues can change colors as well...how are the temps in the cage...proper UVB lighting, what are you feeding...size cage etc...all factors in size and color Lyn

I've only fed it romain lettuce and spinach its whole life. the other four iguanas have had all the same things (sunlight, food, temp.,etc.) the only thing I can think is that I caught them all In Florida. so they didn't all have the same parents.

Wesly,

PLEASE research iguanas as pets. Romaine and spinach should not make up even a signifigant portion of a diet, let alone the full diet! that is like you eating only mcdonalds and hotdogs your whole life.NOT good.

this site, and many others can teach you the basis and above of iguana care. I would be worried about all of your iguanas suffering from metabolic bone disease, and possibly thyroid problems? due to the spinach and lettuce. Caught in time, getting them checked out by a vet, and adjusting their care should help. The picture you posted, by the way, is a beautiful iguana, although looks are not a reliable way to tell health

Heres some pics of my iguana Zephyr...who, a year ago with his old owners: ate dog food, lived in a 55g tank (at that size, 3'5"had no uv, and suffered/suffering from MBD and kidney disease. Igs are wonderful creatures if you give them the effort, time, and research to keep them happy/healthy.

I agree...absolutely your iguanas need a diet change...

Mix in some squash, collard, dandilions, snow peas...but drop the romaine and spinach for sure.

Like the other post said...go and do some research and save your self the vet bill and your iguana the shortened life span.

Usually when they get dark it is from stress or something like that. One of my old igs got dark and started loosing weight real fast, but he didn't make it at the vets a week later. How long has it been that color? He looks really healthy so I doubt it is sick or stressed, but I'm not sure. It's a beautiful iggy. Maybe it's just genetics. Sorry I don't have any help to offer, but I don't think anything is wrong with it.
