Herping in Kansas

rayquaza Feb 14, 2004 06:52 PM

I would really like to go herping this spring with my 10yo but am not sure when the best time would be. I am assuming around April or May. Anyone here from Central Kansas? Do different snakes come out at different times? Is there a book that would help us? I have a list of Kansas species and an Audubon Identification book..Im really wanting to find a milksnake this year. Last year we happened on a ringneck that was giving birth to a stillborn baby it. She was big and solid grey but her baby was dark grey and red with a ring around its neck but it was partially decayed. We left her alone..This year I would like to get pics of all the snakes we find..Any little hints would be great.

There are KHS folks located all over the state. Also, the annual fall meeting is in the home town of who ever the president of that year so there are meetings all over the state.

Finally, you might have a look at the book Amphibians and Reptiles in Kansas by J. T. Collins as a field guide.

Yes just me and my son. And yes we live here. Does that make a diffence in how I go herping? The only venemous we have to worry about is Copperheads in this area. We live in the country so there are a lot of areas to herp. they have a Herp society in KC but it is just too far away..So we are on our own..

What target specie/s will you be looking for ? Where do you plan on doing your activity ? Don't forget your resident hunting license. On venomous, the common specie would be copperhead and timber in the 1/3 eastern part. Of the west and central west it would be the prairie rattler. Throw in the massasauga here and there but not as common.
